Talking to Tuoi Tre, Mr. Nguyen Quoc Hiep - chairman of the Vietnam Association of Construction Contractors (VACC) - said cement and many types of construction materials also increased in price. The association has repeatedly proposed to ministries, branches and the Government, but so far there have been no effective measures to remove construction contractors. According to the calculation of VACC, construction steel accounts for about 18 - 20% of the cost of building high-rise apartments, with the construction of bridges and roads, the cost of construction steel is larger, so it greatly affects the construction cost. If the state management agencies do not control and cool down the prices, many works will break the schedule, forced to stop construction. "The construction industry currently contributes about 8-9% of the country's GDP, if the construction industry is paralyzed, it will definitely affect the economic growth target of about 6% this year," Mr. Hiep said.

According to Mr. Nguyen Quoc Hiep, most construction contractors are in a dilemma. They have already accepted the construction contract, but the steel price spikes, so "doing also dies, if you don't do it, you will die". If the construction works, the more losses are made, otherwise, if you do not continue construction, you will be penalized for progress, or even not paid for the volume of work.

With private works, contractors and project owners sit together to calculate contract adjustments. But for public investment works, many contractors accept to stop the project, incur fines, which affects the overall progress.

Currently, the unit prices of materials announced by the local construction department are often "outdated", partly because the departments also have difficulties. Publicizing the market price, the high unit price will be short of the provincial budget, so many times they "deliberately" offer low.

To ensure objectivity, the Ministry of Construction has surveyed and announced the unit prices of materials by region and region, so it will be closer to the market.

"Hot" price of construction materials in the West

Not only the price of iron and steel, but also other building materials such as cement, sand, stone, bricks, ceramic tiles... in the Mekong Delta also increased at the same time. Cement increased from 5,000 - 7,000 VND/bag, construction sand increased from 30,000 - 40,000 VND/m3...

In Can Tho City, Mr. Pham Quoc Minh - the owner of a construction sand distribution business - said that he currently does not dare to quote prices to customers in advance because the price of input materials is "dancing" day by day. "Currently it is in the dry season, so many people choose as the construction time. But now the price is too high, the input quantity is not good, so I am also very afraid to quote the price to customers", Mr. Minh said.

Many contractors said that the cost of construction materials accounts for about 65-70% of the construction cost estimate. Therefore, the situation of price increase has directly affected the investment costs of many projects, works and houses.
